3 Visual Art Practice And Professionalism; Beyond Academic Community Osuntayo Foluso Peter, Akinbola Tolulope Joan, Samuel Ruth Opeoluwa

There are artists, there are works of art everywhere in the society, one does not need to look far before one can feel the impact of art in homes, schools, offices, churches, hospitals, and many other public places in the society, which is as a result of professional practice in visual arts. Our academic institution are blessed, no doubt with expert hands in the different areas of visual art such as: sculpture, painting, textiles, graphics, photography, ceramics, etc who spend greater part of their days imparting knowledge in the different areas of specialization to student? Every year art graduates are turned out of these academic communities including universities, polytechnics and colleges of education, and expectedly, they are to practice what they have learnt in their different institution and where they fail to do so, this should be a source of worry to their institution especially about the quality of their teaching, research work and services to their community. This might further be interpreted to mean that the learner has not learnt because the teacher has not taught. Visual Art practice is often treated as mere manual activity that requires no application of intellect. There is a general over emphasis on academism to the detriment of professionalism in visual art practice. There are institution where art exhibition is not accepted as equivalent of journal articles for promotion, and this has forced a number of gifted and creative visual artists to abandon practice. Some of these professional drop outs, in defense of their actions, go about preaching the sermon according to academic tradition and regulation without which they claimed, there can be no advancement, yet there is a wide gap between thinking in the academic community and the reality outside. This paper discusses visual art practice and professionalism and its significance in the realization of the societal developmental goals; economically, physically and culturally with recommendation that, as a developing economy, we need to encourage visual art practice for the society to grow physically, industrially and culturally among others.

4 School Spatial Distribution and Students' Academic Performance in Oyo State Public Secondary Schools SOTANNDE Rabiu A PhD

The purpose of this research was to examine the contributions of spatial distribution on students' academic performance in school certificate examinations with respect to English language and Mathematics in Oyo State public senior secondary schools with a view to bringing out optimal productivity. Two hypotheses were formulated and tested. The population involved all the Senior Secondary School (SSS 3) students' and teachers in senior secondary schools in all the public senior secondary schools in Oyo-State. Data available as at the time of data collection for this study indicated that there are 3,200 SSS 3 students and 2,640 teachers in Senior secondary schools in all the 400 public secondary schools. Stratified random sampling method was used to select the local government areas, the schools, teachers and students. Two research instruments were used for this study that is Spatial Distribution Questionnaire developed by Olaniyonu (1987) and pro forma for students' results in SSCE English language and Mathematics. The findings revealed that spatial distribution alone significantly contributed to the variance in the urban and rural located students' performance scores in school certificate examinations in English Language and Mathematics. Base on the findings It is therefore recommended that Oyo State Government must look into spatial distribution of schools and handle spatial distribution of schools with extreme care. School should not be arbitrarily located and politicize and Government should follow the UNESCO recommendation on students' journey to and fro schools hence, the students' journey to the school should not exceed 1.5 kilometer among others.

5 Bio Efficacy of Benth Leaf (pouzolsia Guinnensis) Extracts Against Gastro Intestinal Related Diseases in Growing Rabbits K.T. AKANNI, O.A. OSINOWO

The study examined the level of the use of Benth Leaf (Pouzolsia guinnensis Benth) leaf extracts against gastro intestinal related diseases in growing rabbits. A total of 35 each of six weeks old averaged 550g-600g body weight of three pure lines; the New Zealand White (NZW); American Chinchilla (CHL) and the FCEABK-?, a newly developed rabbit strains were used for the study. These rabbit lines were sourced from the Tetfund funded Rabbit Breeding and Multiplication research farm, Federal College of Education, Abeokuta, Ogun State. The dosage levels of the Pouzolsia guinnensis (Pg) extracts were: 0ml(control), 5ml, 7.5ml, 10ml and 12.5ml per250ml of drinking water per day for a period of six weeks. Eggs (oocytes) per gram of feacal samples of each rabbit strain were collected and analyzed using modified McMaster Technique. Blood samples were also collected at 2 weeks intervals. There was a significant (P<0.05) general decrease in frequency counts and percentages of gastro intestinal worm oocytes and enhanced haematology and serum traits across the dietary treatments due to reduced GI infestation in the animal body. Recommendations were therefore made that the use of Pouzolsia guinnensis (Pg) leaf extracts at 7.5ml/250ml inclusion that had a concomitant negative effect against GI infections, brought about by reduced GIoocytes and enhanced blood chemistry and should be employed by rabbit farmers and breeders as against gastro intestinal infections in growing rabbits; since it is efficient, cheap, non-toxic and readily available.

6 Evaluation of Some Genetic and Non - Genetic Factors Influencing the Perfomance of Layer Chickens in South Western Nigeria K.T. AKANNI, O.A. OSINOWO, G.A. AJAYI

This study was conducted using 5 chicken genotypes comprising 3 exotic purebreds, Nera Black (NB), White Leghorn (WL) and Giriraja (GR), Nigerian Local chicken strain (L) and improved local (B Alpha crossbred). The laying performance of these chickens was monitored to evaluate genetic and non-genetic effect on egg production traits. A total of 506 pullets were evaluated for effect of genotype and season on laying performance. Genotype significantly (P<0.05) affected all production and egg quality traits. Giriraja had the highest body weight at first egg (2107.00 ± 4.0.1g) while White Leghorn had the lowest (1259.62 ± 9.83g). However, Nera Black had the highest weight of first egg (48.52 ± 0.52g) compared with 33.11± 0.01g by White Leghorn which was the lowest. Egg quality traits also followed similar pattern as observed in egg production traits. Results from the study revealed that specific values of age, body weight and performance traits for a particular group of birds in a particular area are unique but other non-genetic factors such as season could subject the value to modification: this suggests that the genetic potential of the Nigerian indigenous chickens can still be improved upon by crossing with exotic strains, as a panacea for sustainable goals of vision 2030 for layer chicken development in humid and sub humid zones of tropical climate.

8 Usage and Satisfaction of e-books by University Students in a Nigerian University Dr. Emmanuel Babatunde Ajala, Miss Esther Arapasopo

Due to paucity of funds to buy books and journals many private universities in Nigeria and other parts of the world leverage on the benefits of eBook usage thus eBooks has become the saving grace for many students. The aim of this study therefore is to find out the pattern of usage of eBooks at the Glorious Vision University, Nigeria compared with other parts of the world. Using the Ajzen`s Theory of Planned Behaviour and Social Media Use as explained by Cameron et al (2012) as the theoretical model for the survey and literature review, Descriptive research design of survey type was adopted for this study with the population of the study of 403 (364 undergraduate and 39 postgraduate) students of Glorious Vision University, Ogwa Nigeria. The respondents were stratified to undergraduate and postgraduate students while the instrument of data collection used was close-ended self-structured questionnaire. To ensure the reliability of the instrument, the questionnaire was pretested with several students not included in the study sample. The paired scores generated from the test were analyzed using Cronbatch Alpha method through the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS). From literature, among 120 participating universities in UK, Nicholas (2008) found that e-books usage was very strong, with 61% of students that participated in the survey using e-books for their academic work. Majority of the participants (91.6%) reported that they used e-books for work and study purposes. Americans however, are spreading their book consumption across several formats. There has been an uptick in the share of Americans who report reading e-books, from 25% to 30%. The result of the analysis shows that the types of e-books used at the Glorious Vision University library are Academic/research/school/class e-books (202, 80.2%). However, Hand-held device such as iPhone or Blackberry (187, 74.2%) and eReader such as Kindle or Nook Google Books (181, 71.8%) are used to access the eBooks while technical manuals (108, 42.7%) and cook books (63, 25%) are used but at a very low level. The level of usage of e-books in Glorious Vision University is high but the use of e-book as a reference tool is low (x=2.77). The pattern of eBook usage is just to extract particular information needed by the students and not to read the whole book. It was also noted from the result that the level of students' satisfaction on the use of e-books in this university is high. From the test of hypothesis, result shows that there is significant relationship between the usage and satisfaction of e-books by the students of Glorious Vision University. It can then be implied from the result of this study that the usage of eBooks by students in the university system in Nigeria can meet up with the level of usage in other developed nations of the world though the sample pose a limitation to the study in the world comparison. However the data generated in this study will be a good tool for further study on eBooks usage among university students.

10 Influence of After-school Program on the Perceived Academic Performance of Ogun State Secondary School Students Amusan Mosunmola Amusan PhD, Onabanjo Comfort Folake PhD

After-school programs offer opportunities to extend the school day for learners, especially for those who are in need of academic support in areas of difficulties. Learners who are having poor grades can improve academically not only if they go to school every day but if they are made to spend a few extra hours in after-school program activities. It has been opined that there may be a positive correlation between low-performance learners' participation in after-school programs and their academic achievement. Many of these learners, especially those from economically/educationally disadvantaged homes or homes where English is not the primary language may experience much difficulty trying to complete home works and assignments. Some parents whose wards attended the program did not particularly believe participating in the after-school program would improve their child's performance in school, they probably kept their child/ward there not necessarily for improvement in their performance, but to be kept out of trouble. As they engage in the after-school program, most teachers not only assist learners to do their home works, but also provide advanced study for their class works. This study made use of one research question and one research hypothesis to assess the influence of after-school programs on the academic performance of secondary school learners in Abeokuta metropolis, Ogun State, Nigeria. Multistage sampling procedure was used for the study. Cluster, purposive, stratified and random sampling techniques were used to obtain a total of one hundred samples (respondents) from the secondary schools in Ogun State, Nigeria. Two research instruments were employed for the study, an adopted questionnaire and an achievement. Some of the findings are; students who attended after-school programs had fewer absences, completed homework more often, had fewer behavioral problems in school, and scored higher on tests. Some of the recommendations are; level of influence of after-school program to the students was high due to the massive help it brought to the abilities and capabilities of the students which advances their academic performance in school, this type of instructional assistance was seen to positively impact students' grades. Also, parents who can not monitor well their children due to their busy schedule were relieved that after school program existed.
