3 The Spoken English of the Hausa Learner of English: A Perception with an Attitude (B) ASMAU USMAN PAKI Ph.D

The impact of English as a language is flet globally and perhaps in every country, only a few people do not speak or come into contact with it. In Nigeria, the status of English as a second language is held in high esteem. Though, the position of English is high in Nigeria among both educated and non-educated but its linguistic texture in the spoken area, is being treated with a negative attitude of perceptibility and comprehensibility. This paper, examines a particular scenario, whereby the spoken English in use is not only a deviant away from the Standard British English, but also the Standard Nigerian English (Odumuh 1987) and Nigerian Phonological English (Hausa) of (Jibril 1982). The paper continues to investigate the dilemma of spoken English from many dimensions, and fears that this deviance is actually imposing on other English phonological varieties of ethnicity around it. If this attitude persists, the Hausa learner of oral English will be either cut off nor tap the full benefits of Information Communication Technology. In conclusion, it shows that the pedagogy of teaching has not really influenced learning, because looking at other scenarios where Arabic is taught as a second language the perception of both segments and prosody is done with ease. The paper warns that, if precaution is not taken at the teaching dimension the attitude of the Hausa learner of the phonological systems of English will completely be negative.

4 The Role of Academic Library and Librarians in Enhancing Entrepreneurship in Nigeria OSAMUDIAMEN NOSA EVANS and OMOIKE ADENIKE DAMILOLA

There is a great need to extend library profession base on the fast growing needs of employment in the country as at today. To reduce the unemployed rate that has reached an alarming stage which is due to economic recession and constant decline in industry which would have lead to the drive of the economy of the nation at large. The present economic realities and the challenges in labour market in Nigeria as well as the increase in unemployment of our graduates also justify the need to equip undergraduates with the basic entrepreneurial skills and accurate knowledge that would enable them to be self-employed after graduation. Moreover, users of library no longer see the need to visit the library because library services are not attractive and packaged in ways that will make them visit the library. There is therefore, the need to make library services attractive; this will require that teachers or lecturers need to infuse entrepreneurial courses in their curriculums irrespective of the courses that they teaches at institutions of higher learning. The acquisition of entrepreneurial texts books both hard copies and soft copies should be available for the use of both students and academic staff . Hence library services need to engage in entrepreneurship education in academic school curriculum will greatly enhance entrepreneurial knowledge and skills which will prepare graduate students for the challenge of the labour market and make them to be self employed in the long run.

Education is a very vital part of human existence be it formal or informal. It is the type or level of education we acquire that determines our level of prosperity and place whatever type of education we have or want cannot be acquired without the use of language, which means without language human beings will find it very difficult to achieve anything meaningful. An adage says “anything worth doing is worth doing well” meaning that any field of work we choose or find ourselves in ,we must utilize all the available means to be successful and outstanding. The available means to utilize taken from Yoruba cultural heritage and how to utilize them is the main focus of this paper. Major keywords of this paper were defined, some cultural heritage of Yoruba people which can be taught to people (even from cradle) with the use of Yoruba language were listed and discussed, for example respect, truthfulness, hardwork, endurance, prudence etc. The paper therefore suggested advertisement, neatness, good approach to customers, attending private and government organized seminars relating to one’s field etc. as a way of moving towards mastery for artisans. Lectures for farmers on mechanized farming or modern day farming will definitely help the farmers in moving towards diverse opportunities and make their work less strenuous as these will put more money in to their pockets and give them job satisfaction and fulfillment.

8 Mastery of Subject Matter and the Emphasis on Instructional Resources among Secondary School Teachers of English Language ADEYANJU ESTHER OLUWATOYIN

The teacher is a key variable in the teaching-learning context, implying that no meaningful talk about improved English teaching and learning is possible without attention to teacher development. The point is this: whatever students will benefits from English instruction is a function of who the teacher is academically and professionally-what he knows, believes and does. Ukeje (2000) captures this supreme importance of the teacher as follows:If the child is the centre of the educational system, teachers are the hubs of the educational process. For it is upon their number, their education and training, their quality and devotion to duty, their effectiveness and efficiency, their competence and their productivity depend on the effectiveness, the capability and the possibilities of the entire educational system and enterprise. The realization of the potentialities of organized education as a veritable instrument for social change and national reconstruction depends largely on the teachers. Excellent educational policies are meaningless unless there are equally excellent teachers to see to their realization. Various governments may vote sufficient funds as enabling resources for education, adequate material resources may be procured, but unless the teachers are properly prepared and positively motivated, little productivity will happen. From what has been said so far about the critical role the teacher plays, it is perhaps clear that if the English teaching efforts are not yielding the desired results, the teacher factor is the first place is to look for the cause, that is why the logical question to ask at this point is, what arrangement is in place for preparing English teacher? It is of course clear that the question can only be answered intelligently within the context of teacher education programmes generally. The objective of this paper is to show how adequate subject matter and instrument can be used enhance effective teaching of English language.
