2 THE NEED TO EQUIP THE ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL) TEACHER WITH CURRENT PRACTICES FOR EFFICIENT PERFORMANCE Obianyo, Josephine Ego.

Education of the citizens of a nation is very important for the purpose of which every nation makes frantic effort to achieve using her vibrant citizens. Teachers are the agents of this education and as we are all aware, Nigeria is a multilingual nation and English is the official language of communication, language of business, commerce and industry among other functions. In schools, English language is taught as a second language and also the medium of studying other school subjects thereby making more pronounced its role in the school system. This research intends to investigate who a teacher is, then an ESL teacher, qualities of an ESL teacher, the current trends in modern language teaching among other objectives. The role of English language in Nigeria demands that English language teachers must be effectively equipped. Because English language is taught as a second language (ESL) in Nigeria, the teacher is referred to as an ESL teacher. An ESL teacher in this modern era needs to be equipped because of innovations in all fields of education. The avenues for such equipping include: sponsorship to conferences, seminars, workshops, on the job training among other trainings. Teachers are expected to be exposed to activities that will keep them abreast with modern technological applications in language teaching and learning. When this is done, better performance is expected of them in the job. When citizens of a country are able to acquire the necessary skills through education, they can easily apply the knowledge in diverse areas to connect the country to other parts of the world for cooperation across borders and boundaries.

5 SEXUALITY EDUCATION AND SEXUAL RISK TAKING BEHAVIOUR AMONG UNIVERSITY FRESHMEN IN ABEOKUTA METROPOLIS AND COUNSELLING IMPLICATIONS Filani, Joseph Bankole Ph.D.

Freshmen in Universities tend to engage in sexual risk taking behaviour largely due to the new environment coupled with freedom which hitherto was not enjoyed prior to their entry into the institutions. This paper investigated sex education and sexual risk taking behaviour among university freshmen in Abeokuta metropolis and the counselling implications. Three hypotheses were postulated at 0.05 level of significance. A sample of one hundred and twenty participants was drawn from three universities within Abeokuta metropolis. Data was generated using the Sexual Risk-Protective Behavioural scale which was adapted from Premarital Sexual Permissiveness Scale (PSPS) by Reiss (1967) and analysed using chi square and t-test statistical methods. Findings revealed no significant difference in sex education outcomes of respondents; there was a significant difference between the sex education outcome of direct entry and UTME University freshmen and the difference between male and female manifestation of sex education outcome behaviour was found to be significant; consequently, the counselling implications of the findings were discussed. The study concluded by recommending comprehensive sex education programme for the Nigerian University authorities in order to maintain healthy lifestyle in tertiary institutions with its attendant benefit on national development.

10 PROFICIENCY IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE: A SIGNIFICANT TOOL IN SOLVING WORD PROBLEMS IN MATHEMATICS DR. ONABANJO C. F, DR. AINA, M. O. and FAYIGA, OLANREWAJU IBIKUNLE

Many research works have indicated that English Language and Mathematics are very important subjects in Nigerian secondary schools without which no studentcan proceed to tertiary institutions (FGN, 2013). The two subjects are closely related and also interrelated. This paper attempts to point out the link between the two subjects and how the skills in English Language and its comprehension are very useful and significant in solving word problems in mathematics. Three research questions were asked in order to guide the study and a survey research design was employed. A purposive sampling technique was used to select three secondary schools from each of the three states in the South-West of Nigeria namely: Ogun, Oyo and Lagos States, and one in Gainesville, Florida. Forty students (20 males, 20 females) were randomly chosen from each school, which gives a sample size of 400 students. Three validated and reliable research instruments were used to collect data for the study, namely Mathematics Word Problems Test (MWBT), Mathematics Non-word Problems Test (MNPT) and Students Questionnaire (SQ). The findings of the study showed that the students performed poorer in word problems than the non-word problems due to inability to translate and interprete the word into mathematics statements, among others. Based on the findings, conclusion was drawn, and recommendations were made.
